Beatrice Grace Collins was once an up and coming artist who worked in a myriad of mediums, ranging from oil to charcoal, even ink for tattoos. She was pleasantly surprised when she received an invitation to the maiden voyage of Earth’s first commercial spaceliner, The E.E. Destiny.

The flight was picture perfect until The Destiny suddenly and inexplicably disappeared from every tracking station on the planet. When it mysteriously reappeared twenty-three minutes later, the craft had suffered catastrophic structural damage and nearly all the passengers and all but one of the crew were dead. The lone crew member miraculously brought the crippled spacecraft back to Earth but the survivors had all been altered during “The Incident”.

At the time of “The Incident”, the subject recalls viewing space from one of the observation bubbles. Whatever happened during those twenty-three minutes, it changed her on a fundamental level. Her skin was left a grayish-black with some as-yet undetermined inner energy burning through in spots. However, it was the change to her eyes that was the most shocking aspect of her transformation: where once she had pale blue eyes, now burned orbs of energy, one dark and the other bright.

After The Destiny had landed, the young woman made this ominous statement to the press: “I have stared into the eternal night, and the fires of creation. Nothing can compare. I have gazed into the abyss, and it has stared back.” Any hopes of leading a normal live now made impossible, Grace as she now chose to call herself threw her lot in with the remaining survivors of the ill-fated Destiny, who had decided to remain together to use their newfound abilities to protect others from the unknown.
