The subject was raised by her father after the death of her mother when she was three years old and was often baby-sat by her aunt. From about the age of six, her aunt moved away and she looked after herself some evenings while her father, a professional boxer, was training or fighting.

The subject attended school in Westside and was a good student but, because of her exemplary grades, was bullied by other children. She consequently turned to her father for help. Wanting to teach her self-reliance, he taught her how to defend herself. She took to training well and persuaded her bullies to leave her alone then to stop picking on the children they went after next. The school believed she was bullying other students and spoke to her father. Despite numerous parent/teacher meetings, her behavior did not improve and she was given frequent detentions with eventual suspension.

She considered that a price that was worth paying. Through home study, her grades remained good and she passed her exams with high marks. After taking up weight-lifting as a teenager, she discovered her developing mutant powers. She was unable to find a ‘one-rep max’ weight, finding the strength to lift whatever the bar could be loaded with. Tests in our facilities were also unable to determine her max. lift. An accident in her family garage involved a wall-shelf unit filled with sharp tools falling upon her after a loaded weight bar snapped and damaged the supports when it fell. She emerged unscathed with the discovery of her impervious skin and strength.

She decided to wear a mask and costume and continue her program of dissuading bullies on a larger scale. As a politically-conscious girl, she took the name Panther in reference to the political group of the 60s but omitted the “Black” so as not to promote stereotyping and, in her words, “because people of all races and beliefs face prejudice and harassment”.
