Lamont “Lee” Sanford is the son of Fred and Elizabeth Sanford, two UNTIL scientists intent on using their research to better mankind. Their devotion to their work estranged their son as they would often dedicate more time to their work than to him. The two even used their son as a test subject for intelligence-boosting experimentation. While the successful experiment granted Sanford a genius-level intellect, he resented his parents for treating him more like a guinea pig than a son.

Sanford’s resentment caused him to favor athletics over science, eventually winning an athletic scholarship. Much to his father’s disdain, Sanford joined UNTIL on finishing university, where he studied law enforcement and criminology. His life changed irrevocably while visiting his parents’ laboratory at UNTIL Headquarters as they were testing a device designed to open inter-dimensional portals. The experiment accidentally allowed a creature from the Qliphothic Realm into the lab. The elder Sanford managed to return the creature to its native dimension but not before it had slain his wife and severely injured his son. Desperate to save his son’s life, The elder Sanford used untested cybernetic enhancements to rebuild and reconstruct his son’s body. He succeeded but didn’t anticipate his son’s revulsion and anger at what he had done.

The reaction of others to his condition only intensified Sanford’s resentment and alienation. Resigning his commission and moving to Westside, Sanford turned his back on his former life and became reclusive. It was in this seamy neighborhood that Sanford took up the mantle of hero when it was threatened by the robotic hordes of Dr. Destroyer. Sanford soon discovered that protecting the innocent from danger gave him a sense of purpose and self-worth that he had long since forgotten.
