John Arcanatis is the son of the late Dr. Anthony Arcanatis, Professor of Archaeology at the University of Cambridge. In 1939, the then twenty-five year old John had accompanied his father on an expedition to the ancient Sumerian city of Ur in what is modern-day Iraq. The two were exploring an area west of the Ziggurat of Ur, which Sir Leonard Woolley had discovered several years before, when they unearthed an entrance to an underground temple.
While investigating the temple, a massive earthquake rocked the area, which caused part of the ancient structure to collapse, killing Dr. Arcane and trapping his son in the subterranean temple with no food and little water. He wandered in the dark for nearly eight days in an attempt to discover another way out to no avail. Near death, Arcane stumbled upon a ritual chamber. In the center of the chamber atop an altar inscribed with glyphs that pre-dated Sumerian cuneiform by thousands of years stood the mythical Orb of Light, an artifact said to contain the collected arcane wisdom of all humanity. Arcane touched the glowing sphere and was transformed.
Untold knowledge of the universe and its mysteries flooded into the young man, infusing him with power and charging him with a terrible mission – to serve as guardian of the Earth dimension until a new Archmage arose. Using his newfound abilities, Arcane escaped the temple. After relocating to the United States, he assumed the guise of a stage magician while battling occult threats as one of the first super-powered humans of the golden-age – Doctor Arcane.
Although preferring to work alone, Doctor Arcane would assist other superheroes when they faced supernatural threats. He married the Irish-born super-heroine Stonehenge (Registry No.: 595471) in 1980 and went into semi-retirement as a hero. Despite the fact that Doctor Arcane had reportedly died while fighting his nemesis Hades in 2010 during the crisis called “The Great Darkness” (Champions case file AA4812), he has recently been spotted fighting Takofanes alongside his daughter, the super-heroine Arcana (Registry No.: 790468).
