Dr. Diana Lance was perhaps one of the most gifted physicists of her time. If not for the fact that she was a woman in a man’s world, her reputation may well have exceeded that of her contemporaries Robert Oppenheimer or even Albert Einstein. With the ever-growing threat the Axis were posing, however, the War Department was willing to overlook gender when selecting the head of a top-secret project code-named Philadelphia, which aimed at devising a method of rendering ships invisible.

On October 28, 1943, the scientists watched as The USS Eldridge vanished from sight but, before they could celebrate, the cloaking device malfunctioned, sending untold ergs of energy throughout the ship. Most of the crew of the Eldridge and many of the scientists were killed outright. The survivors including Lance and her nephew Edward Chambers, who had sneaked into the complex out of curiosity, were rushed to a secret medical facility where, weeks later, they were released with a clean bill of health.

Perhaps due to their unique biochemistry, Lance and Chambers began exhibiting superpowers. As rumors of the Philadelphia Experiment began leaking to the press, Lance and Chambers in the guise of Lady Liberty and the Indy Kid exploded into the headlines after thwarting a ring of Fifth Columnists attempting to destroy the Statue of Liberty.

Spear of Destiny
The artifact von Sebottendorf used to exile several metahumans from his home dimension apparently has an analogue in ours – The Spear of Destiny currently on display at the Millennium City Museum of Natural History

As the Allies made their way towards the heart of Hitler’s Fortress Europa, Hitler retreated to his bunker to regroup. A select group of so-called “mystery men” including  Lady Liberty and the Indy Kid were sent into Berlin to capture Hitler and his generals but were caught in a mystical maelstrom conjured by sorcerer Rudolf von Sebottendorf, leader of the enigmatic Thule-Gesellschaft (English: The Thule Society). Lance and Chambers awoke to find themselves in an alternate dimension in which they had never existed.
