Alexandra “Alex” Marrero, the daughter of Roberto (Meteor Man) Marrero and singer/songwriter Cate Taylor, had a tumultuous childhood. Her parents met in Los Angeles while trying to get their musical careers off the ground. After a whirlwind courtship, they married but the marriage soon ended due to the irreconcilable differences between career and super-heroics. Awarded custody of the then seven year old, mother and daughter moved to San Francisco to start anew.

After marrying record producer Phil Epstein a few years later, her mother rocketed to the top of the charts but trouble soon began for Cate and Alex. Epstein, who was becoming increasingly abusive, forced Cate into a hectic recording and touring schedule, causing friction between mother and daughter. While on stage at Radio City Music Hall, Cate passed out from what turned out to be complications of an inoperable brain tumor that ended her life six days later. As Roberto’s work history was too spotty to prove he could support her, Epstein was awarded custody of Alex.

One night, the intoxicated Epstein assaulted the fifteen-year-old Alex and would have killed her if not for the manifestation of her energy manipulating powers. After the terrified Epstein relinquished custody, Roberto retired as Meteor Man to become a full-time father and make up for lost time. Remembering how much super-heroics had cost him, Roberto raised his daughter to value normalcy.

Yet, Alex could never forget how it felt to use powers so, on her eighteenth birthday, she informed Roberto that she would use her powers to help those that could not help themselves regardless of how he felt. Recognizing the Marrero stubborn streak, Roberto managed to convince her of the need to hone her skills before facing metahuman threats. After six months of intense training, Alex appeared over the skies of Los Angeles as the energy-wielding Spectrum.
