Captain Al Jones, Royal Canadian Air Force, had always dreamed of going into space but never dreamed that he would be battling creatures from space until 1965, when the Qularr attacked Earth. One of the first wave of responders to the extraterrestrial threat, Jones fought with distinction but was captured and experimented on by the alien bio-engineers. Freed along with hundreds of other captives by the Justice Squadron, Jones returned to duty never suspecting that his genes had been altered by the Qularr scientists.
Years later, Jennifer Jones, Al Jones’ granddaughter, suddenly slipped into a coma on her 23rd birthday while celebrating her graduation from MIT. A month and a day later, Jennifer surprised everyone by awaking from her coma as if she had simply been sleeping. Jennifer soon discovered that the coma was an intermediary step in her transformation into something more than human.
Armed with advanced technology that had once been used against humanity, she dedicated her life to safeguarding those that were unable to protect themselves as the Shroud.
Initially a lone operative working in her native Canada, the Shroud was on hand in the adventure that would eventually lead to the formation of the Squadron Supreme. Due to her superior tactical aptitude, technological know-how and natural leadership skills, she was chosen to lead the Squadron Supreme.
Addendum: After the conflict known as Independence Day, our source within the Squadron revealed that a Qliphothic entity known as Na’amah had abducted the Shroud and subsequently impersonated her for several weeks. It was this entity that had founded the group formerly called the Squadron Sinister and that had nearly succeeded in opening a portal for her kind in downtown Millennium City.
